Eye of the Beholder by Nanhart Eye of the Beholder by Nanhart
WHAT THE CHRIST. THIS IS THE LEAST WORKED ON PONY COMIC I HAVE. IT'S IN SCRAPS FOR A REASON. IT IS NOT WORTHY OF EQD... (omg something of mine made it to EQD...... I... I can't think.... QAQ )
*BRB FREAKING OUUUUUUT* :iconflailplz:

*Original text is below, excuse my screaming of confusion.*
I am so sorry about how sloppy this looks. While I had initially sketched this out after the episode originally aired, I didn't get to really mess with it (and thus mess it up) until a certain stupid tooth surgery. Numb, tired and angry (and freaking hungry), I started forgetting which layer I was working on (amongst other things).

I am not going to fix it because what free time I have is going to other things (like VAST). All I hope for is at least the idea is presented well enough to be thought worthy to think about.

Back to your regularly scheduled program, I will show myself the exit.

*Original Idea*
I think what the episode was trying to portray everyone feeling compelled to do the other's work in a messed up mental history of whom was whom blended with fate. They feel like they should be doing something else but can't help but do this other thing anyway. The song however, gave me a different idea. How do you know what the cutie mark is telling you?

Cutie Marks have always baffled me. I'm not the only brony who is confused about it's powers, nor the only one who has jested at how it works. So here are my unwanted opinions:

Cutie Marks are suppose to show up when you discover what you are good at in life, but how it decides to represent that is vague at best. You do the right thing and then an image appears on your behind. (If you don't catch that image fast enough however, could you mistaken what that thing is?)

The episode didn't quite explain how they think their lives where warped. Only in the end it felt like a dream, quite like Discord's spell.

So going off just on what the cutie mark symbols look like and how others may interpret that. With RD's attitude, if she were to think she became an animal trainer/keeper, I would think the cutie mark would look something like your cliché animal 'tamer' with circus stage and lion whip. Why would she think butterflies = animal care?

Rarity's gems... it could just as easily translate into dragon chef into this world. How can you tell it's for fashion design? Especially of the cloth sort, could just as easily be a jeweler. And since Pinkie Pie works at a bakery, I don't see how the apple cutie mark means she has to leave the shop. If anything, it just means her pastries are more specific (where the hell was AJ's family?).

But then my idea would take longer to adapt into an episode and plays more into character psychology and what is destiny anyways how can we assume that is what is meant to be, trying to be happy even if we never get to do our dream job (<which, by the way would be a very important lesson to teach kids), etc, etc.

So that's my interpretation. In the end it doesn't matter, especially since we have yet to see parts 2 and 3 yet and thus it's unfair to truly judge this episode until then.

Further Notes:
:bulletred: ~mirtar34 makes note that tecnology has an H. I'm sorry! If only GIMP had spell check. ^^;
:bulletpurple: If you don't find this funny that's quite fine. The purpose of this was only to start ideas and conversation, nothing more.
:bulletblue: If you did laugh, I am thankful I could brighten your day. ^^
:bulletgreen: ~Twylite-Sparkle Brought up the cool idea that this helps explain how many ponies can have the same cutie mark but have different jobs. All in interpretation!

:bulletyellow:I would super appreciate if your comment didn't consist of complaining about the original episode. I KNOW, I'M NOT HAPPY WITH IT EITHER. Please however, share your ideas and "What ifs" of how it would have been better done.

Huzzah for constructive criticism.

I like this, I feel it makes a whole lot more sense than the episode did. The character interpretation of their new marks seems to line up with their personalities as well.
iceblueflare Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2015
My only complaint is that you still got Rainbow Dash's cutie mark wrong - her talent is SPEED, every pegasus can control the weather. Maybe Rarity could use it to become a one mare production line of dresses?

Other than that: GENIUS!! I salute you!

What really gets to me is that they all look... unsure. They're good at things they're not completely into, so they have to stick to them to survive and make it.

This comic alone convinced me to watch your activities from now on. I don't even have to see the rest of your work. This is so freakin' intelligent and gives hope, I think. Also,a fav.

Where were the Apples? They were cowering in a corner, remembering what happened last time Miss Pinkamena's hair was flat. They also remembered the town rumors, including the nasty one started when Miss Pie and Miss Dash were away fro a few days without warning.

This is a so much better interpretation then the actual episode, which frankly didn't make any sense on any level.

Love how you took the concept and turned it on its head.  The ponies were still able to find their gifts even among different roles.

Destiny is what you make it. And Twilight's friends here have made much of their new destiny's by making it their own.

This looks like a great concept. Would you mind if I try writing a fanfiction after that image?

A very late, you are totally free to do so. I'd love credit, but it's fine if you don't. I'd also love it if you would toss me a link to your story when you've finished writing it.

I love your lesson. Honestly, I wish they would do that in the show. It would be a MLP message ^_^

A super late, yes you can. I'd appreciate it if you tossed a line somewhere saying where you got the idea, but I won't weep if you don't.

I'd love a link to this story if you write it.

After all the time, this is still probably my favorite MLP comic. Great ideas for their destinies! I like how I was almost accepting them towards the end, but then noticed Pinkie's hair and started over with my thoughts.
Nanhart Featured By Owner Oct 26, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
A very late, "Thank you for thinking so"!

It's not that they haven't accepted- like being stuck in a job that is actually pretty good considering the situation, but you still feel "off". You can be talented at something and not enjoy it.
xpegasus12 Featured By Owner Jan 7, 2014
I love this, but I don't understand why Pinkie Pie's hair is straight, wouldn't she be happy about baking, and making pastries, she is shown to love baking in the show.

Wow... I'm late to the party, but this is REALLY interesting!!
But yeah, cutiemarks can really be up to interpretation. Most people use Cheerilee, but just look at Spitfire's cutiemark!!
What IS it? Nothing in particular is seems. It's the color of flames, and kind of the shape of flames, but not necessarily flames. It's just a vaguely fire-like orange and yellow pattern. And what does it have to do with her talent? What IS her talent? If it is an image of fire, why is it in that shape?
Only Spitfire knows at the moment.

But all of these re-interpretations of the cutiemarks the girls get are really interesting. Had the girls been allowed to actually decide what to do with these cutiemarks instead of seemingly being bewitched into doing what the mark's original owner did, this is probably what would have happened.
But they still look appropriately unhappy with what they perceive to be their lot it life.

Good work!!

Weeeeeeeeell Pinkie Pie's talent is not really baking. He talent is making parties and making everypony smiles.
Baking is just a hobby and cake just comes with the territory.

Especially agree about Rarity's CM  (she was a fashionista BEFORE she got it!)

Sometimes I wonder if the creative staff regret this whole "cutie mark/destiny" thing and the complications/plotholes it makes...

This makes so much more sense than the episode. I just love it!
nayialovecat Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2013
Rarity's talent is searching crystals.
Rainbow Dash's talent is "rainbow boom" or "speed", not weather control... (all pegasus are weather controlers)
And... I'm sorry, but on the Sweet Apple Farm are also Mac, Granny Smith and Applebloom... Applejack isn't only one who takes care of the farm.

A lot more sense in this comic then in the actual episode
Orangecraz Featured By Owner Jul 25, 2013
Well, I'm guessing that, when they "gained" their new cutiemarks, they "gained" messed up memories of the one who used to have it, and what it meant for them. So they attempt the last owner's job in the exact same way the last pony did. And of course, since their personalities and experience don't match with the previous owner of their cutie mark, they failed. Badly.

I'm guessing this comic answers the question of, "what if they were given a chance to consider what their cutie mark MEANT?"

It's a lot to take in. I know.
Jolttra Featured By Owner Jun 28, 2013
These do make a lot more sense and I can totally buy all of them.... except Pinkie Pie's. That's just scary.
CharlotteTurner Featured By Owner Jun 26, 2013  Student Digital Artist
See this would have made the episode alot less WTF for me. And unless they go insano and explain the cutiemarks in the next season which I highly doubt... none of that last episode is really clear... to anyone. Those who say it is are just creating headcanon gobbledegook...

Nice work.
